Reducing a global manufacturer's emissions as part of its SBTs

Greenfish helped a global manufacturer in the food and biotechnology industry to set up a plan to reduce its emissions as part of its Science-Based Targets.

The client committed to a 30% emissions reduction by 2030, compared to 2016 levels. Between 2016 and 2018 however, the client’s emissions had already increased by about 14%.

Over the course of two months, Greenfish developed a detailed and prioritised list of actions to allow the client to reach its GHG reduction goal, resulting in a 10-year implementation roadmap.

The reduction roadmap mainly focused on Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Scope 1 covers direct GHG emissions which stem from sources that the company owns or controls, such as the generation of heat or burning of fossil fuels on site. Scope 2 emissions are indirect GHG emissions resulting from the purchase of electricity produced by a utility company.

To kick off the project, on-site visits and interviews were organised, and a short stakeholder analysis was completed. The plant’s total energy consumption (electricity and natural gas) was then analysed, and consumption hotspots were identified. In total, the plant’s energy consumption amounted to 250-300 TJ per annum. In addition, an AS-IS mapping of the plant’s processes was performed and historical data on energy consumption over the past 10 years were analysed.

A list of potential solutions to implement was then drafted, and regularly updated or refined in the course of the project.

Greenfish assessed the impacts of each solution and performed detailed engineering calculations in order to ensure the client would meet its 30% GHG reduction target. Interactive data visualisation techniques, using Power BI software were used to conduct technical and financial analysis to identify viable solutions. Business cases for each of the solutions were then presented to the client, based on thorough research and tenders from suppliers. Greenfish also investigated innovative energy efficiency financing options to help implement the project proposals.

The final solutions were selected during a 1-day workshop with the client. Solutions were then prioritised and incorporated into a 10-year roadmap.

A total of 38 solutions were identified by Greenfish, resulting in a 44% GHG emissions reduction compared to the client’s baseline, far exceeding the initial target. The roadmap was delivered to the client in the form of a living document to be used throughout the implementation phase.

The top 5 solutions included:
Process optimisation;
Energy management;
Heat integration;
Steam trap optimisation;
Condensation recovery.

The first 3 solutions alone were sufficient to cover the 14% emissions increase experienced by the client between 2016 and 2018. In addition, about 18% of GHG emissions reduction can be achieved with €0 CAPEX solutions and 25% of the solutions have a payback period of less than one year. Greenfish estimated that the implementation of the roadmap will result in savings of €320K per year for the client.
